Who To Notify When You Move House

Andrew Lee Property Lawyers

When you’re planning to move house, there is often an overwhelming amount of tasks to complete. Your to-do list will no doubt be getting longer and longer each day, as you think of all the things you need to consider prior to moving. Of course, it’s hard to forget the practical aspects of moving, such as arranging removalists, packing up your belongings and planning move-in day, however, it’s the admin that often gets left on the back burner.

The majority of house-move admin involves notifying various people and companies of your move, so as a quick reminder, we’ve put together a shortlist of who you need to give a heads up to about your upcoming move.

A conveyancing lawyer

Be sure to have a reputable conveyancing lawyer lined up prior to making an offer and, as soon as this is done, get in touch straight away. Many people make the mistake of waiting until after making an offer, but it can actually help to speed up the sale. Remember that most solicitors work on a no move no fee policy, so even if your sale falls through, you won’t owe them anything.

Your bank

You’ll need to let your bank know about your change of address and when this will be effective from. Also, let them know of any direct debits or standing orders that might change, such as your utility providers changing over.

Your utility providers

Tell your utility providers that you’re leaving your current property, but discuss the option of transferring some services over to your new place such as broadband and telephone, as you may get a better price. You should start shopping around early for providers for your new property as you’re more likely to get good deals if you plan ahead.

The local authorities

For electoral registration and council tax, you’ll need to let both your old local authority and your new local authority know about your change of address. However, remember not to do this until you’ve completed the sale, as it could interfere with the sellers’ own council tax bill!

Your subscriptions and services

This covers anything from magazine subscriptions, food delivery services, the local milkman and local newspapers - all of which you’ll either wish to terminate as you move to a new area or redirect to your new address. You’ll need to transfer your TV licence, which can be done online .

The post office

Finally, make sure your post gets forwarded to your new home. There’s nothing worse than missing a bill because the letter is sat in the letterbox of your previous property! You can set this up online too, via the Royal Mail website .
