Decorating Your Rental While Keeping Your Deposit

Couple with first house

One of the biggest struggles with renting a property is trying to make it feel like your home, while not making big changes that would violate your tenancy agreement. However it’s not always massive differences that can make a property feel your own, but small changes that will make a big difference.

Here are some tips for decorating your rental while keeping your deposit.

First Check Your Tenancy Agreement!

Your tenancy agreement should include detailed information about what, if any, changes you can make to the property. If you are making a change you think might violate your agreement, make sure to carefully read it first to find out before doing anything. You may find you can make some cosmetic changes without violating anything.

Wall Art

You can easily personalise a space with a few pieces of wall art or pictures. If you are not allowed to damage the walls to hang frames, you can use other options such as command strips. These are great, secure strips that will affix your art to walls and can be easily removed without damaging the wall at all.

Removable Wallpaper

A lot of rental properties keep the walls quite uniform, usually using dull white or cream paint. Spruce a space up by using some decorative wallpaper. You could use a basic pattern to add some colour or change the mood of a space with a bold print. Whatever the choice, this will instantly add character to a space. Just ensure the wallpaper you use can be removed safely without damaging the wall.

New Furniture

You won’t have this problem if you rent an unfurnished space but if you are living in a furnished space, sometimes the existing decor can be quite boring or not fit your style. Enhance the space by bringing in a few of your own pieces. Even if you can’t afford a new sofa, an exciting coffee table or rug will bring a lot of character to the room even with the old furniture still in there.

Houseplants

A great way to make any space a bit better is to bring the outdoors in. Invest in a few houseplants to brighten up a dull-looking rental property. They also have the benefit of improving the air quality, so are both aesthetically pleasing and practical. Just ensure no soil escapes from the pots and damages windowsills or carpets.
