Four Tips for Relocating Your Business

Relocating your business is incredibly exciting. Whether your company is growing, you’re moving to a more suitable location or you simply want to rebrand in a new office, a relocation is typically a great sign for your business. However, a relocation does require careful planning and preparation - it’s not something that can be carried out overnight and generally, the more prepared you are, the smoother the move will go.

Here’s four tips for relocating your business from the expert commercial property lawyers.

Start planning months in advance

There’s a good chance that you have way more stuff than you realised. It’s best to start planning a business move a few months in advance - if possible, we recommend planning and preparing around six months ahead of your move date. This will ensure that you’re completely ready when the day comes.

An office move isn’t as simple as moving everything from one location to another; you need to do everything you can to reduce business downtime and set up in your new premises as quickly as possible. This may involve organising engineers to set up your systems correctly and working out the logistics of how you plan to move everything out of your building.

Declutter before your move

An office move is the perfect opportunity to declutter and get rid of anything you no longer need. The last thing you want is to transport unnecessary items to your new premises. Make sure you go through all of the drawers, desks and cabinets and shred any paperwork that you no longer need. In fact, relocating is the perfect opportunity for your office to go completely paperless!

Hire removalists to help you

Running a business while organising a relocation isn’t the easiest of tasks. We recommend hiring a team of reliable and reputable removalists to help you with your move. Make sure you find a company that specialises in commercial moves and one that has experience packing and transporting computers and other expensive electrical equipment.

Don’t forget to update your website

It’s important that you don’t forget to update all of the relevant people, customers, clients and suppliers about your move. Both the post office and your clients need to be aware of your move and when it’s taking place. In fact, you’ll need to update your business cards, letterheads, client forms and anything else that has your address on. We recommend doing this a week before your move, so that you can settle right in when you move without having to worry about updating everyone.
