Four Amazing Houses in Kent

Leeds castle

Known as the ‘Garden of England’ this south-east county is full of rich history, including Canterbury Cathedral, Leeds Castle and many stunning stately homes and gardens. While the city of Canterbury and its cathedral have been attracting pilgrims for centuries, it’s the houses that we’ll be looking at here. There are many spectacular buildings to choose from across Kent’s cities and towns, so see the list below for just four of our favourites.

Chartwell

This National Trust property was the home of Winston Churchill for over 40 years; from 1922 until his death in 1965. Nowadays, visitors can explore rooms including the library, study and sitting room; all expertly preserved to remain as they were when the Churchill family lived here.

Penshurst Place

Based near Tonbridge, the historic Penshurst Place was the birthplace of the Elizabethan poet, courtier and soldier, Sir Philip Sidney. The 14th-century house was once the property of Henry VIII but it’s stayed in the hands of the Sidney family for over 460 years. There’s plenty to explore, from the medieval house itself to 500 acres of parkland.

Leeds Castle

A castle could be described as a grander type of house, and we simply couldn’t leave one of Kent’s main historical attractions off the list. This Norman stronghold has been the private property of six of England’s medieval queens, as well as a temporary property for Henry VIII and his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. The castle contains a unique collection of historical dog collars, plus grand rooms such as the library and Queen’s Bedroom.

Godinton House

This country house dates back to the 14th century and the decor covers centuries of style, from the Medieval hall to Victorian touches. No family has lived in the house since 1996 but the way it’s been preserved is designed to create a homely - rather than a museum - feel. There’s also plenty to explore in the gardens, including the walled garden, rose garden, lily pond and Italian garden.
